Which resin is right for me?
Unsure which resin is right for you? In this blog we talk through the differences between our original, deep pour and UV resin kits!
We offer three different types of resin:
- Original/Shallow pour resin, which is 1:1
- Deep pour resin, which is 2:1
- UV resin, which cures under a UV light.
Our most popular resins are our original and deep pour resins.
New to resin?
Firstly, if you are new to resin and want to get into making resin art then our coaster kit is perfect for you! It comes with all of the tools/moulds/colours you need to get started and is all re-usable. Along with 1L of original resin, enough to make 10 coasters! This is always our recommendation for newbies and it comes with links to tutorials and step by step instructions. Click here for our coaster kit!
What are the differences between original and deep pour resin?
Original resin, also known as shallow pour resin is 1:1. It can be poured up to a depth of 20mm and cures in 24 hours. It can be used for smaller moulds, jewellery making, home decor and coating. You can mix up to 1L of original resin at a time without it overheating. It is a thicker resin, meaning it mixes beautifully with mica powders, pigment pastes & alcohol inks and keeps the patterns/swirls really well. Check out our original resin here.
Deep pour resin, it is 2:1, takes 72 hours to cure and is more suited for larger pours. It can be poured for depths between 20 and 100mm and you can mix up to 12L of deep pour resin in one go. Therefore it is ideal for much larger creations like tables & worktops and is commonly used for this. It is also much thinner, meaning it is perfect for flower preservation as bubbles release much more easily. Check out our deep pour resin here.
Both types of resin have an overlap and you can use deep pour and original resin for the same mould at times! For example our vase mould. If you were wanting to create a vase and embed flowers, the deep pour would be better suited. But if you wanted to add pigment pastes and have a swirly effect, the original resin would be better suited! Both resins can also be turned on a lathe once cured.
What is UV resin?
UV resin is only 1 liquid, it doesn't require mixing with a hardener to cure. It cures under a UV lamp in roughly 2 minutes. It is ideal for smaller pieces and for artists who want to be able to create things quickly! It doesn't tend to be as durable or heat resistant as our other two resins, which is why it is mostly used for smaller more intricate designs. Check out our UV resin here.
